“Colheitas”

“Colheitas is a series of five paintings, created as a visual tribute to the Iberian Peninsula’s rich heritage. The word colheitas - Portuguese for “harvests”- honours both the grape harvest and the shared moments that define a life. Each canvas is built up in several layers creating movement and depth. Gold stencil motifs, inspired by Moorish tile designs from Andalusia and Southern Portugal, add a luminous surface detail. The result is a conversation between history and abstraction, tradition and expression.

Each painting is inspired by a single grape variety from Spain or Portugal. Their characteristic aromas - floral, fruity, earthy - guided the choice of colours in the layered backgrounds. Like a wine that evokes a place or memory, these works aim to translate flavour into form.

“Colheitas” is a tribute not only to the grapes themselves, but to a way of life: relaxed gatherings, shared meals, and the warmth of time spent together.

Inspiration behind the series

Monastrell

Aromas of black fruit, wild herbs and a whisper of liquorice

Monastrell is a blue grape with ancient roots in Spain, thriving in the dry, rugged landscapes of the southeast. Known for its bold, dark character and earthy aromas, it speaks of warm soil, resilient vines, and a winemaking tradition that stretches back centuries.

This painting draws on those qualities—layered in shades of black and deep blue—to reflect the richness and colour of the grape and the terrain it calls home. The mood is grounding and intense, like a quiet evening in the countryside after the heat has lifted.

Alvarinho

Aromas of passion fruit, lychee, and jasmine—bright, fragrant, and just a little exotic.

Alvarinho is a white grape native to the green, rain-kissed regions of northern Portugal and Galicia in Spain. Celebrated for its vibrant acidity and expressive aromatics, it carries the freshness of the Atlantic coast—salt-tinged air, sun-dappled mornings, and the perfume of spring blossoms.

This painting reflects those qualities: a light blue background conjures coastal skies and ocean breeze, while delicate layers in shades of purple and white capture the floral and tropical notes of passion fruit, lychee, and jasmine. The mood is luminous and fragrant, a gentle tribute to elegance, freshness, and the quiet joy of discovery.

Palomino

Aromas of sea air, green apple and almonds

Palomino is a white grape native to southern Spain, best known as the heart of the region’s centuries-old tradition of fortified winemaking. Grown in luminous chalk soils and shaped by Atlantic breezes, it reveals gentle notes of green fruit, minerality, and dry almond.

This painting reflects that restrained elegance: soft layers of pale blue and green suggest sea air and the crispness of green apple, while white and warm almond tones evoke the grape’s subtle character. The mood is calm and sun-drenched—a tribute to stillness, heritage, and the understated beauty of the Andalusian landscape.

Tempranillo

Aromas of cherry, plum, and fig—ripe, generous, and grounded in tradition.

Tempranillo is one of Spain’s most iconic red grapes, deeply rooted in the country’s winemaking heritage. Known for its vibrant fruit character and quiet structure, it carries a sense of balance—sunlit ripeness woven with earthy calm.

This painting reflects that harmony: soft pale bluish green recalls the gentle glow of figs ripening on the tree, while layered blues reflect the depth of plums and vibrant red hints at the lushness of cherries.

The feeling is warm yet composed—a visual echo of timeless gatherings, slow meals under blue skies, and the generous heart of Spanish life.
